Northern Gateway Alliance (NGA) has received an award for its use of ERM software to provide integrated scheduling, cost and risk management in the construction industry. New Zealand based NGA uses Active Risk Manager from Strategic Thought Group for the management of risk and opportunity.

Strategic Thought Group, the creator of enterprise risk management (ERM) software Active Risk Manager congratulates Northern Gateway Alliance on its recent Constructech Vision Award for Building Development and Management.   The silver award was given to Northern Gateway Alliance (NGA) for its fusion of project management tools to provide integrated scheduling, cost and risk management solutions that are at the cutting edge of construction management.  To underpin this solution NGA has been using Strategic Thought’s ERM solution, Active Risk Manager since early 2006.

The Northern Gateway Alliance was formed in March 2004 and is comprised of The New Zealand Transport Agency, Leighton Contractors, Fulton Hogan, URS New Zealand, Tonkin & Taylor, Boffa Miskell, United Group and VSL.  The Alliance is responsible for the design and build of the Northern Gateway Toll Road between Orewa and Puhoi in New Zealand.

Active Risk Manager (ARM) is used to proactively manage risk across the project.  Tim Davis, Risk Manager – Project Optimisation at NGA explained, “We required a system that supported the management of risk and opportunity rather than a straight modelling tool.  The structure at NGA is similar to that in any enterprise, it has four sub projects under the NGA umbrella.  These are earthworks, structures, tunnels and general.  Each of these four sub projects are split again into zones such as bridges, tunnels, packages of work etc.  There are also sub projects under Structures and Tunnels.  Using Active Risk Manager was ideal to gain visibility of the risks and opportunities that each individual project carries as well as having the capability to summarise those risk and opportunity items across the entire portfolio of the Northern Gateway Alliance.  This is true Enterprise Risk Management.”

Martin Metcalf, CEO of Strategic Thought Group congratulated NGA and said, “The Constructech Vision Awards honour companies that have realised the advantages of applying innovative technologies to their everyday businesses and NGA has certainly done that.  It has benefitted from project-wide visibility, accurate reporting and the communication of risk and opportunity information.  Active Risk Manager allows NGA to manage the risk and opportunity items in a proactive manner while facilitating the flow of information to the right people.  This flow of current information enables informed decisions in terms of work execution and risk management.  Well done NGA and we look forward to continuing to support this exceptional project.”

The Northern Gateway Alliance Project Controls team won a Primavera Global Excellence Award in November 2007 for its innovation in utilising industry leading software applications to provide an integrated controls solution to the Northern Gateway Toll Road project.  Primavera is used by NGA as the main planning and scheduling tool, to provide data integration and it acts as a project controls “hub”.

The Construct Vision Awards were presented by Constructech magazine at the end of the third annual Technology Day conference at the Westin Chicago, Northwest US in August 2008.
